A Meditation on Watching Your Life Instead of Being Trapped in It

Humor me for a moment.

Imagine your life is a cinema.

You walk in. Sit down. The lights dim.

And a film begins to play.

Sometimes it’s a love story.

Sometimes it’s an adventure.

Sometimes it’s a brutal heartbreak documentary you didn’t agree to star in.

There are scenes of success.

Scenes of shame.

Flashbacks from childhood.

Montages of “what if.”

Slow-motion replays of mistakes.

And here’s the part most people forget:

You are not the movie.

You are the one watching it.

When We Forget We’re in a Cinema

The problem isn’t that the film plays.

The problem is we run toward the screen trying to change it.

We try to:

  • Rewrite the ending.

  • Edit out painful scenes.

  • Add characters back into the story.

  • Fast forward to a happier chapter.

But the harder we try to control the movie, the more emotionally tangled we become.

Meditation is not stopping thoughts.

It’s not forcing calm.

It’s not becoming emotionless.

It’s simply this:

Sitting in the seat while the film plays.

Thoughts are scenes.

Emotions are the soundtrack.

Memories are flashbacks.

Anxiety is dramatic music building tension.

But the screen itself?

Untouched.

The cinema does not burn when a fire scene plays.

The screen does not drown when the ocean appears.

In the same way, your awareness is not damaged by what moves through it.

That awareness is who you really are.

The Breakup Movie (Or Any Painful Chapter)

Let’s make this real.

You walk past a place you once shared with someone.

Suddenly — boom.

Music swells.

Images replay.

Tears rise.

Your body reacts like the scene is happening again.

It feels real.

Because the nervous system doesn’t know the difference between memory and present moment threat.

But meditation teaches you something revolutionary:

This is a projection.

A very convincing one.

A beautifully produced emotional replay.

But still — a replay.

And the moment you notice,

“Oh… I’m watching this,”

space opens.

That space is freedom.

The Ocean Beneath the Surface

I live on the ocean. I see this every day.

On the surface: wind, chop, storms, chaos.

Below: stillness.

The surface is the movie.

The depth is awareness.

When you meditate, you drop below the waves.

The storm can continue above you.

But you are no longer being thrown around by it.

This doesn’t make you cold or detached.

It makes you grounded.

And from grounded, you can choose your response instead of being hijacked by the scene.

Why This Matters for Your Life

If you don’t know you’re in a cinema,

every movie feels permanent.

Every emotion feels final.

Every setback feels defining.

Every loss feels like identity.

But when you practice sitting in the seat:

You realise movies change.

Scenes pass.

Characters exit.

New stories begin.

And the screen remains.

Stable. Spacious. Untouched.

You are that screen.

The Practice

Next time emotion hits:

  1. Pause.

  2. Breathe.

  3. Say quietly:
    “A movie is playing.”

Not to dismiss it.

Not to suppress it.

Just to observe it.

Sit back in the seat.

Watch.

Let it run.

The more you practice this, the less you become owned by your story — and the more you become the author of your next chapter.

That is where transformation begins.
