The Question That Changes Everything

“What would make this an extraordinary conversation?”

Of all the questions I ask in coaching, this is one of my favourites.

Not because it’s clever.

Because it changes everything.

Most people enter conversations on autopilot. They talk about their week, their problems, their to-do list, or whatever feels urgent. Before long, an hour has passed and nothing has really changed.

But when I ask…

“What would make this an extraordinary conversation?”

…something shifts.

People pause.

They stop thinking about what they should say and start listening to what actually matters.

The conversation suddenly has intention.

It has direction.

It has possibility.

An extraordinary conversation isn’t about finding the perfect answer.

It’s about creating the space where the truth you’ve been avoiding finally has room to emerge.

Sometimes the extraordinary conversation is the one where someone admits they’re deeply unhappy for the first time.

Sometimes it’s finally saying out loud, “I don’t want this life anymore.”

Sometimes it’s discovering a dream they’ve buried for twenty years.

Sometimes it’s forgiving themselves.

Sometimes it’s realising they already know exactly what they need to do.

The question gives people permission to stop performing and start being honest.

That’s where transformation begins.

I don’t want to have interesting conversations.

I don’t want people to leave saying, “That was nice.”

I want them to leave saying,

“I’ve never thought about my life like that before.”

Because extraordinary conversations don’t just change your afternoon.

They can change your direction.

One insight can alter a relationship.

One conversation can change a career.

One honest moment can rewrite the next twenty years of your life.

That’s why I ask the question every time.

Not because I know where the conversation will go.

But because I know that when two people commit to making it extraordinary, something remarkable usually happens.

So before your next conversation—with your partner, your friend, your colleague, or even yourself—pause for a moment and ask:

What would make this an extraordinary conversation?

You may discover that the life you’ve been looking for is waiting on the other side of a better question.
