My Biggest Insight of My Life

You are the space it appears in

There are insights… and then there are life-altering recognitions.

The kind that don’t just change how you think —

they change what you believe yourself to be.

This was mine:

You are not your thoughts.

You are not your emotions.

You are the space it all appears in.

For most of my life, I was caught inside the storm.

A thought would come — and I’d believe it.

An emotion would rise — and I’d become it.

A story would start — and I’d live inside it like it was reality itself.

Like being out at sea in a small boat,

every wave felt personal.

Every gust of wind felt like it was happening to me.

I was trying to control the ocean.

Trying to fix every thought.

Calm every emotion.

Rewrite every story in my head.

And the more I tried…

the more exhausted I became.

Then something shifted.

Not because I figured it out.

Not because I controlled it better.

But because I saw something clearly for the first time.

A thought appeared…

and instead of following it, I noticed it.

An emotion rose…

and instead of resisting it, I felt it — without becoming it.

And in that moment, there was space.

A quiet, open, aware space…

that had always been there.

Unaffected.

Unmoved.

Untouched.

That’s when it hit me:

I am not the storm.

I am the sky it moves through.

Thoughts come and go — like clouds.

Emotions rise and fall — like waves.

Stories begin and end — like tides.

But the space they appear in?

That doesn’t come and go.

That’s what you are.

And here’s the strange, beautiful part:

You don’t have to create this space.

You don’t have to earn it.

Or learn it.

Or become it.

It’s already here.

Right now.

Reading these words.

Take a moment.

Pause.

Notice your breath.

Notice the sensations in your body.

Notice the thoughts passing through your mind.

Now ask yourself:

What is it that’s aware of all of this?

Not as a question to answer with your mind…

but something to look toward.

Because whatever sees the thought…

cannot be the thought.

Whatever notices the emotion…

cannot be the emotion.

This is the doorway.

Not to becoming someone new…

but to realizing what you’ve always been.

Out on the ocean, I’ve learned something.

You can’t control the waves.

You can’t stop the wind.

And if you try — you’ll suffer.

But if you understand the nature of the sea…

you stop fighting it.

You move with it.

You trust it.

You let it be what it is.

Your mind is no different.

Let the thoughts come.

Let the emotions move.

Let the stories rise and fall.

You don’t need to control the ocean.

You just need to remember:

You are not the waves.

You are the space they appear in.

And from that place…

There is a quiet freedom.

A deep stillness.

A sense that, no matter what passes through your life…

something in you remains untouched.

That’s who you are.

You’ve just been looking in the wrong place.
