“I Can. I Will. Watch Me.”
Sometimes, the words we need most are the ones we’ve carried with us all along.
I think I was about fifteen when my mum gave me a fridge magnet.
It had four simple words written on it:
I CAN. I WILL. WATCH ME.
I don’t remember exactly what was happening in my life at the time, or what prompted her to give it to me. But somehow, those words stayed with me.
For years, they were just words on a fridge magnet. A small gift from my mum, tucked away somewhere in the background of my life.
Until today.
Today, as I embark on a new project, those four words came back to me.
Not gradually. Not because I was searching for inspiration. They just appeared in my mind, as if they had been waiting for this very moment.
And then, unexpectedly, I had to stop for a moment.
Because sometimes, a moment catches you off guard. Something small opens a door to something much bigger. And suddenly, you feel the weight of where you’ve come from, how far you’ve travelled, and what it means to begin again.
I CAN. I WILL. WATCH ME.
At fifteen, I wonder what those words meant to me. Perhaps they represented possibility. Perhaps they were a reminder that I was capable of more than I realised.
Today, they mean something different.
They remind me that every new beginning asks something of us. It asks us to believe before we have proof. To take the first step before we know exactly where the path will lead. To keep going when the outcome is uncertain and the voice of doubt gets louder than the voice of possibility.
And perhaps, most importantly, they remind me that the journey is never just about what we achieve.
It’s about who we become along the way.
I’ve spent years exploring personal growth, asking questions, learning to listen, and discovering how much can change when we give ourselves the space to think differently.
Now, as I step into this new project, I feel that familiar mixture of excitement, uncertainty, hope, and vulnerability.
I don’t have every answer. I don’t know exactly how everything will unfold.
But perhaps I don’t need to.
Perhaps I just need to remember those four words.
I CAN.
Not because everything will be easy, but because I am willing to try.
I WILL.
Not because success is guaranteed, but because this matters enough to me to give it my heart.
WATCH ME.
Not as a challenge to the world, or a declaration that I have something to prove.
But as a quiet promise to myself.
A promise to show up. To keep learning. To stay curious. To give this dream a genuine chance to become something real.
Perhaps she knew something then that I’m only beginning to understand now: that sometimes, the smallest gestures leave the deepest marks. That a few words, offered with love, can travel with us through years of uncertainty, change, disappointment, and discovery.
And that sometimes, when we need them most, they find their way home.
So here I am, beginning again.
A little older. A little wiser. Still dreaming. Still learning. Still believing there is something meaningful to create and something more to discover.
And with a full heart, I find myself smiling at four words from a fridge magnet I received when I was fifteen.
I CAN. I WILL. WATCH ME.
Mum, wherever those words came from when you gave them to you, thank you.
I think I’m ready to live them.
And this time, I understand what they mean.
