Life Is a Miracle
Somewhere along the way, we forget.
We become so familiar with being alive that we stop noticing the extraordinary nature of it.
We wake up.
We breathe.
We walk.
We eat.
We love.
We hurt.
We laugh.
We lose.
We begin again.
And somehow, we call this ordinary.
But it isn’t.
Life is a miracle.
Not because everything works out.
Not because we get what we want.
Not because every relationship lasts, every dream comes true, or every chapter makes sense.
Life is a miracle simply because we are here.
Think about it.
You did not have to exist.
Out of an almost unimaginable number of possibilities, somehow, you became you.
A particular body.
A particular mind.
A particular collection of memories, experiences, wounds, dreams and questions.
And now, for a brief moment in the vastness of time, you get to experience being alive.
You get to see the morning.
Feel the warmth of the sun.
Hear the ocean.
Hold someone’s hand.
Taste coffee.
Laugh with a friend.
Cry when something matters.
Watch the sky change colour.
Take a breath.
And that breath is astonishing.
You don’t have to earn it.
You don’t have to achieve something first.
You don’t have to become more successful, more attractive, more spiritual, more productive or more impressive.
You simply receive it.
Perhaps this is what we forget when we spend our lives trying to become enough.
We keep moving the finish line.
When I have this, I’ll be happy.
When I achieve that, I’ll relax.
When I meet someone, I’ll feel loved.
When I have enough money, I’ll feel safe.
When I become the person I think I should be, I’ll finally be enough.
And life keeps whispering:
You are already here.
Maybe the greatest tragedy isn’t that life is short.
Maybe it is that we spend so much of it waiting to start living.
Waiting for the future.
Waiting for permission.
Waiting until we have figured ourselves out.
Waiting until the uncertainty disappears.
But uncertainty is part of the miracle.
We don’t know how many sunsets we have left.
We don’t know which conversation will be our last.
We don’t know which person will change our life.
We don’t know when an ordinary Tuesday will become a memory we would give anything to experience again.
That is not a reason to live in fear.
It is an invitation to pay attention.
To be here.
Really here.
Because perhaps the extraordinary isn’t hidden somewhere in the future.
Perhaps it is hiding inside the ordinary moments we keep rushing through.
The coffee.
The conversation.
The walk.
The hug.
The breath.
The silence.
The person sitting beside you.
The person you haven’t met yet.
The ocean moving exactly as it has moved for millions of years.
The fact that your heart continues to beat without you telling it to.
There is something deeply humbling about that.
So maybe life isn’t asking us to conquer it.
Maybe it is asking us to experience it.
To love while we can.
To forgive while we can.
To say the thing we have been afraid to say.
To stop postponing joy.
To put down the armour.
To let ourselves be seen.
To stop treating ourselves like a project that needs fixing.
Because underneath all the uncertainty, doubt, confusion and fear, there is something you already know:
You are alive.
And that is not a small thing.
You don’t need to understand the whole journey.
You only need to take the next breath.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Look around.
Notice that you’re here.
This moment will never happen again.
And perhaps that is the miracle.
Not that life lasts forever.
But that, for a little while,
we get to be here at all.
So breathe.
Look up.
Call the person you love.
Go outside.
Feel the sun.
Listen to the ocean.
Laugh a little more.
Love a little deeper.
And don’t wait for life to become extraordinary.
It already is.
Life is a miracle.
And somehow,
you get to experience it from the inside.
