The Miracle You Keep Forgetting
Every morning you wake up and do something extraordinary.
You become conscious.
Not productive.
Not successful.
Not wealthy.
Not impressive.
Conscious.
Think about that for a moment.
For billions of years the universe existed without your awareness. Stars were born and died. Oceans formed. Mountains rose. Rain fell on forests with nobody there to witness it.
Then somehow, out of stardust and atoms, the universe learned to look back at itself.
Through you.
Right now you are reading these words.
Your eyes scan symbols.
Your brain transforms ink into meaning.
Your imagination creates images that don’t physically exist.
You can remember yesterday.
You can imagine tomorrow.
You can question your own thoughts.
How astonishing is that?
Yet we rarely celebrate it.
Instead we wake up and immediately ask:
What emails do I have?
How much money do I need?
What’s next?
What haven’t I achieved?
Before we’ve even tasted the miracle of being alive, we’ve convinced ourselves we are already behind.
We’ve become so familiar with consciousness that we’ve mistaken it for ordinary.
It isn’t.
You can hear birdsong.
You can feel the warmth of sunlight on your skin.
You can laugh until your stomach hurts.
You can fall in love.
You can sit quietly beside the ocean and experience something no camera, no computer, no artificial intelligence, no machine can fully capture.
The simple feeling of being here.
Maybe life isn’t asking us to become someone extraordinary.
Maybe life is inviting us to notice that existence already is.
The next time you rush through your morning, pause.
Not to meditate.
Not to optimise.
Not to fix yourself.
Just to notice.
Notice that you are aware.
Notice that thoughts appear from nowhere.
Notice that breathing happens by itself.
Notice that your heart has never once asked for your permission to beat.
You are riding on top of an intelligence that has been keeping you alive every second since before you were born.
Perhaps the greatest tragedy isn’t that life is short.
It’s that we spend so much of it asleep inside our own thinking that we miss the miracle happening beneath it.
Today, don’t celebrate your achievements.
Celebrate your awareness.
Celebrate the impossible fact that, for one brief moment in the history of the universe, you get to experience what it feels like to be alive.
That may be the greatest miracle of all.
