The Small Things Are Standing Between You and the Life You Want
People often believe they’re one big breakthrough away from the life they want.
A new job.
More money.
The perfect relationship.
The right opportunity.
But coaching has taught me something very different.
It’s rarely the big things that hold us back.
It’s the small things we’ve been avoiding.
The difficult conversation.
The boundary that needs to be set.
The apology you’ve never made.
The fear you’ve never admitted.
The dream you’ve been too afraid to pursue.
They’re easy to dismiss because they seem insignificant.
But these tiny moments quietly shape the direction of our lives.
One question I often ask in coaching is:
“What’s the smallest thing you’re avoiding right now?”
The answer usually comes immediately.
“I need to have that conversation.”
“I need to leave the job that’s draining me.”
“I need to forgive myself.”
“I need to tell someone how I really feel.”
“I need to ask for help.”
None of these things are physically difficult.
What’s difficult is facing what lies underneath them.
Fear of rejection.
Fear of failure.
Fear of disappointing others.
Fear of letting go of the person you’ve always been.
Here’s what most people don’t realise.
The life you want is often hidden behind the smallest acts of courage.
One conversation.
One decision.
One boundary.
One honest moment.
One commitment to yourself.
Tiny hinges swing big doors.
When you finally deal with the small things, something unexpected happens.
Your mind becomes quieter.
Your energy returns.
Your confidence grows.
Life begins to move again.
Not because your circumstances suddenly changed.
But because you did.
So instead of asking,
“How do I change my life?”
Ask yourself,
“What’s the smallest thing I’m avoiding that I already know I need to do?”
Start there.
Because the biggest transformations rarely begin with giant leaps.
They begin with the courage to handle the tiny things that have been quietly standing between you and the life you truly want.
