There Is a Recipe for Every Emotional State
I used to think my emotional state was something that happened to me.
If I felt anxious, I waited for it to pass.
If I felt stuck, I hoped tomorrow would be different.
If I felt inspired, I crossed my fingers it would last.
But over the years, through coaching hundreds of people and observing my own life, I’ve come to see something different.
Every emotional state has a recipe.
Confidence has a recipe.
Joy has a recipe.
Peace has a recipe.
Gratitude has a recipe.
Love has a recipe.
And so do fear, resentment, overwhelm, loneliness, and despair.
We often focus on the emotion, when we should be looking at the ingredients.
Imagine baking a cake.
If you follow the exact same recipe every single time, you’ll get the same cake.
Life works much the same way.
Wake up.
Check your phone.
Scroll social media.
Rush through breakfast.
Skip exercise.
Ignore your emotions.
Stay inside.
Replay old stories in your mind.
Eat processed food.
Avoid difficult conversations.
Repeat this recipe for a few weeks, months, or years…
You shouldn’t be surprised by the emotional state it creates.
Now change the recipe.
Wake before the world.
Watch the sunrise.
Move your body.
Take three deep breaths.
Write down what you’re grateful for.
Spend time in nature.
Have a meaningful conversation.
Read something that expands your thinking.
Eat nourishing food.
Ask yourself one powerful question.
“What would make today extraordinary?”
You are now following a completely different recipe.
And eventually, you’ll experience a completely different emotional life.
One of the biggest myths we believe is that emotions simply happen to us.
While we can’t always control what life throws our way, we have far more influence over the ingredients we consume every day than we realise.
The conversations you have.
The people you spend time with.
The thoughts you rehearse.
The books you read.
The amount you sleep.
The food you eat.
The questions you ask yourself.
These are all ingredients.
They are constantly shaping your inner world.
When someone comes to me for coaching, they usually want a different feeling.
“I want more confidence.”
“I want peace.”
“I want purpose.”
“I want freedom.”
Rarely is the answer simply to think differently.
Often, we need to redesign the recipe.
Sometimes that means changing a habit.
Sometimes it means changing an environment.
Sometimes it means letting go of a relationship.
Sometimes it means asking one question that changes everything.
The beautiful thing is this:
You don’t have to change your entire life today.
Just change one ingredient.
Go for a walk instead of scrolling.
Call a friend instead of isolating yourself.
Choose courage instead of comfort.
Ask a better question.
One ingredient changes the recipe.
The recipe changes the emotional state.
The emotional state changes your decisions.
Your decisions shape your future.
So the next time you find yourself asking,
“Why do I feel this way?”
Try asking a different question instead.
“What recipe have I been following?”
Because there is a recipe for every emotional state.
And the moment you change the recipe…
You begin to change your life.
