Never Really Cared Until I Met You

A song came on the other day, and one line stopped me in my tracks.

“Never really cared until I met you.”

I felt tears welling up before I even had time to think.

It wasn’t because of the lyric.

It was because of what it reminded me of.

There are people who come into our lives and awaken something that had been sleeping for years. Before them, we might have been successful, busy, independent, distracted, or simply surviving. Life was happening, but we weren’t fully feeling it.

Then someone arrives.

Suddenly you care.

You care how another person is feeling.

You care about building a future.

You care about becoming a better version of yourself.

You care in ways you never imagined possible.

That can be one of the greatest gifts another human being gives us.

And when they leave…

It can feel like they took that part of you with them.

But they didn’t.

They simply revealed it.

Love doesn’t create your capacity to care.

It uncovers it.

That’s an important distinction.

Because if someone awakened your heart once, your heart is still capable of being awakened again.

The grief we experience isn’t proof that we’ve lost the ability to love. It’s proof that we loved deeply.

For a long time, I believed I missed one person.

Now I wonder if I also miss the version of myself that existed when I was with her.

The man who dreamed bigger.

The man who imagined a family.

The man who felt his heart open in ways it never had before.

But perhaps that man isn’t gone.

Perhaps he’s waiting.

Waiting not for another relationship, but for me to continue becoming him.

The people we love leave fingerprints on our lives.

Not so we spend the rest of our lives looking backwards.

But so we remember what we’re capable of feeling.

Sometimes a single lyric can unlock months of emotion.

Not because music creates the feeling.

Because it gives our hearts permission to remember.

And maybe that’s the invitation.

Not to mourn the fact that you cared.

But to be grateful that you discovered you could.

Because once your heart has learned how to love deeply, it never truly forgets.

The person may leave.

The love changes.

But the heart that was awakened is still yours.
