The One Question That Has Changed Hundreds of Lives
In 2021, I started asking every coaching client the same question.
Not because it was clever.
Not because I’d read it in a book.
But because I discovered it had the power to change the direction of someone’s life.
Before I ask it, I say this:
“You’re here for a reason. You’ve invested your time, your energy and your commitment to be here with me in this moment.
But I don’t really care why you’re here today.
I care about why you’ll be grateful you came three years from now.”
Then I ask them to slow down.
Not to think harder.
Not to come up with the “right” answer.
I ask them to become still.
To let the question travel deeper than their mind and into their bones.
Then I ask…
Imagine that three years have passed.
It’s the same day.
The same date.
By chance, we bump into each other on a street in Bangkok.
You smile, walk over and say:
“Hi Ross. You coached me three years ago. During one of our sessions you asked me one question… and it changed everything.”
Then I say:
“Tell me about your life.”
Not the life you hope for.
Not the life you’re wishing for.
Not the life you’re praying might happen one day.
Tell me about the life that already exists.
Tell me about your business.
Tell me about your relationships.
Tell me about your health.
Tell me about your purpose.
Tell me about the adventures you’ve had.
Tell me about the person you’ve become.
And as you speak, don’t stay in your head.
Slow down.
Feel it.
Experience it.
Speak as though those three years have already happened.
Then imagine yourself looking me in the eye and saying…
“Holy shit, Ross… the last three years have been incredible.”
Then you begin telling me the story.
Something extraordinary happens when people answer this question.
Their posture changes.
Their breathing changes.
Their energy changes.
For a few precious moments, they stop living from their current circumstances and begin living from their future identity.
The future stops being a fantasy.
It becomes a memory waiting to happen.
That’s where transformation begins.
Because once you’ve experienced your future self emotionally, your decisions today start to change.
You stop asking:
“What should I do?”
And instead ask:
“What would the future version of me do?”
That one shift creates a ripple effect.
Different choices.
Different habits.
Different conversations.
Different courage.
Over time…
A completely different life.
I’ve watched clients build businesses they once thought were impossible.
Repair relationships.
Find love.
Change careers.
Move countries.
Rediscover joy.
Not because of one question alone.
But because one question helped them see a future worth moving towards.
Questions are powerful.
The quality of your life is often determined by the quality of the questions you ask yourself.
So today, I invite you to answer the same question.
Close your eyes.
Take a slow breath.
Travel three years into the future.
Imagine we meet by chance.
Walk over to me.
Smile.
And say…
“Ross… you asked me one question three years ago.”
“Let me tell you what happened next.”
What story would you tell?
And more importantly…
What decision can you make today that allows that story to become true?
